5 Benefits of Moving Back Home After College

By Alyssa Laffitte on January 29, 2018

Congratulations, you’re now a college graduate! You’ve worked hard for four years to earn a degree, but what happens after? You’ll have to make some important decisions about the next phase of your life, since you will no longer have a university housing and feeding you. One of those decisions will be your new housing situation. Where will you live? Many college graduates move back home, at least temporarily. Moving back home might sound unappealing, especially after having your independence for a few years now. However, it’s not all bad! Here are some important benefits of moving back home after college, even if you will only be staying temporarily.

1. Reduced (or maybe even free!) rent

One of the biggest benefits of moving back home after college is that you can save a lot of money. Your parents might be kind enough to offer you a cheap (or even free!) rent. You can deposit the money you would have spent on rent in a savings accounts for when you do live on your own and you need it. Saving money on rent is an amazing benefit of moving back home with your parents.

2. Seeing your pets

When I am away from home, I miss my dog so much! Another great benefit of returning home after college is that you get to cuddle with your childhood pets every day. If you have a rough day, you can just spend some time with your pet and feel better. If you’re bored, you can play with them. Living with your pet again is another great benefit of moving back home after college.

3. Being close to people and places you know

Even if you love the city your school is in, there is something very special about coming back to your hometown. You can visit familiar malls, restaurants, movie theaters, and music venues when you move back home. You can visit your family members, especially if you haven’t talked to them lately. Surely, your grandparents and aunts/uncles would love to see you! You can even revisit your old school, if you would like! (I had great relationships with my teachers, so I like visiting my old schools.) Being close to people and places you know is one of the benefits of moving back home.

4. Connections for job opportunities

Moving back home means you will reconnect with many people you knew when you were young. Reconnecting with old friends can be advantageous for many reasons! First, like I said in the previous point, you will have friends who have known you well, and for a long time. Second, your old friends might have connections for job opportunities or apartments in the area. They might be able to suggest a place for you, or they can serve as a recommender for a job. (Or for a friend your age, you might even decide to become roommates!) Moving back home can help you find connections for job opportunities!

5. Easy to adjust to the next phase of your life

After you graduate college, you begin a new phase of your life. Your life will never be quite like it was while you were an undergraduate student. You will either continue your education (for example, you might be going to graduate school) or will enter the workforce. Being in a familiar place, like your hometown, will make the transition to this new phase of your life much easier.

It’ll be easier to look for jobs or for apartments from the comfort of your hometown, with the support of people you know and love, rather than having to make all those decisions on your own. Having familiar people and places around you will make it easier to adjust to this new, post-grad phase of your life.

Life will never be the same once you graduate college. You will no longer have a university providing you with food and a place to live; you will be responsible for finding these things yourself! Sometimes, this means you might need to move back in with your parents, at least for a little while. Moving back home is an adjustment if you’ve been independent of your parents for the last four years. Still, it’s a good option to consider, especially if you want to save money and be in the comfort of a familiar place with familiar people. Don’t think you can’t come home after you graduate from college!
